Here is a sampling of recent letters to the University community and other statements and opinion pieces penned by Chancellor Mark A. Nordenberg.

Each August, the University formally launches the new academic year at our annual Freshman Convocation. As one important part of that ceremony, newly enrolled undergraduates rise and collectively commit to “The Pitt Promise.” They are led, from the podium, by the elected President of the Student Government Board and by a wide range of other student leaders, who appear on the Petersen Events Center’s big screen.

Pitt has helped advance this region for more than two centuries as an educational institution. More recently, it also has become one of the country's leading research centers, with annual research expenditures now exceeding $640 million. These expenditures alone support more than 23,000 local jobs and represent a return of more than $3.60 for every dollar of Pitt's state appropriation.

The year that formally closed on June 30 was another outstanding year for Pitt—the most recent in a growing and unbroken succession of years in which our University has become a markedly stronger institution. The year just closed was another period of exceptional progress for Pitt, and we enter the new year with great momentum. Among other things, both the academic stature and the fiscal health of the University were boosted by the fact that we reached historic highs in such mission-critical areas as applications for admission and research funding. Also, as private support has become increasingly important not only for Pitt but for all of American higher education, it is noteworthy that last year’s fundraising efforts produced institutional records in terms of total voluntary support, individual support, foundation support, and total number of donors; attracted the largest gift in our history; and pushed our capital campaign past the $1.25 billion mark.
